Growth strains supply of names for Web sites
User Rating: / 1

As the last meadows and vacant lots disappear from inland boomtowns, some of the businesses sprouting up there find themselves jostling for space even on the virtual landscape of the Internet.

Temecula's economic growth has increased the value of locally focused domain names that have long been registered and used, such as temeculavalleyhomes.com and temeculainformation.com. Development in surrounding communities has created a more recent market for Web addresses that incorporate names such as Menifee and Murrieta.

Sellers of Internet addresses surf for — and get — some big payoffs

Internet domain names are red-hot again.

This year, 15 names used in Internet addresses have resold for at least six figures to companies and individuals hoping to tap into big audiences. On.com got $635,000. Macau.com fetched $550,000.

Sex.com went for a record $12 million in cash and stock to adult-entertainment company Escom in January, according to industry-trade reports and sources with knowledge of the deal, who declined to be named because of the private nature of the sale.

Sales of 5,851 domain names generated $29 million in 2005, compared with the sale of 3,813 names for $15 million in 2004, says market researcher Zetetic. And the pace is quickening: In the first three months of this year, 1,949 names have generated $14.2 million, says Domain Name Journal magazine.

Masters of our domain (names), the cash cows of the Internet
User Rating: / 0
Yun Ye is one of the most elusive, and successful, businessmen in Canada. His fortune is worth over US$150 million. Yet he has no known address, office or employees. Even his former lawyer refers to him as more myth than man. People have spent years trying to secure a business meeting with him. The few who do leave wondering if it was really Yun Ye that they met. For all that's known about Ye, a Chinese citizen rumoured to have been living until recently with his family in a modest condo in downtown Vancouver's Wall Centre, he might just run his affairs from a laptop computer and a lawn chair. He's what's known as a "domainer." He is, in fact, the world's most successful domainer, a pioneer in a highly lucrative industry based on buying, selling and developing Web addresses, or domain names.

Outside his shadowy world, almost no one has heard of Ye -- though anyone with an Internet connection is likely familiar with his stock-in-trade: those simple websites that, like snippets ripped from the Yellow Pages, offer nothing but lists of links to advertiser sites. The sites may seem purposeless, but behind them lies a multi-billion-dollar industry.

A domain by any other name is not the same
User Rating: / 0
These days, you really can't start a small business without getting on the Web, but it's also never been harder to score a snappy URL.

There's reason to worry about a shortage of marketable domain names. To date, more than 70 million domain names have been purchased, and most - if not all - dictionary-word domain names (i.e. house.com, furniture.com) have already been taken.

But that doesn't mean business owners should give up the search for a domain that is easy to remember and could boost traffic.
